CASL Architecture

Hybrid Storage Architecture Designed for High Performance and Capacity Efficiency

Nimble Storage CS-Series arrays are built on a unique, patented Cache Accelerated Sequential Layout (CASL) architecture. Nimble Storage’s CASL architecture differs from the traditional flash-based storage approach in which flash is used as a tier. Instead, CASL architecture is designed to leverage the benefits of the lightning-fast random read performance of flash, as well as the cost-effective capacity of hard disk drives. Nimble Storage’s CASL architecture also incorporates a wide range of features that enable the arrays to store and serve more data in less space. These features include:

  • Dynamic Flash-Based Read Caching: CASL architecture eliminates the need for complex policies by caching active data into a flash-based SSD in real time.
  • Write-Optimized Data Layout: CASL architecture enables faster performance by collecting random writes to the array, compressing and writing them sequentially to disks.
  • Inline Compression: Leveraging variable block compression and multi-core processors, CASL architecture compresses data as it is written to the array with no performance impact.
  • Scale-to-Fit Flexibility: CASL architecture allows Nimble Storage arrays to scale both performance and capacity non-disruptively and independently of each other.
  • Snapshots and Integrated Data Protection: Simplifying restoring snapshots and eliminating any performance impact from the snapshots, CASL architecture can take thousands of point-in-time instant snapshots of volumes.
  • Efficient Replication: CASL architecture enables easy and affordable disaster recovery by efficiently replicating data to another array via compressed, block-level changes only.
  • Zero-Copy Clones: Ideal for VDI deployments, CASL architecture allows snapshot-based read/writable clones of existing volumes to be created instantly.
