IBM TotalStorage DS5300: Designed for Mid-Range and Departmental Storage Needs

A High-Performance, High-Flexibility Disk Storage System

While the IBM DS5100 is the base system in the DS5000 series family, the IBM TotalStorage DS5300 is the DS5000 series' high-performance system offering. Configured with the option of eight or sixteen 4 or 8 Gigabits per second (Gbps) Fibre Channel (FC) host ports, the IBM DS5300 (1818-53A) also offers a choice of four or eight 1Gbps or 10Gbps Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) host ports. The DS5300 also offers a combination of the host port types, supporting up to a total of sixteen host ports using FC and/or 1Gbps iSCSI, or a total of eight host ports if one or more 10Gbps interface cards are present. Besides mixing host interfaces, the IBM DS5300 also mixes drive types to take advantage of the many benefits of tiered storage.

"Pay As You Grow" Scalability Ideal for Consolidated or Virtualized Environments

The IBM TotalStorage DS5300 storage controller features 16 disk expansion ports. These ports allow the IBM DS5300 to attach to expansion units such as the IBM EXP5000, IBM EXP810 and IBM EXP5060. Up to 28 EXP5000 or EXP810 expansion units can be attached to the IBM DS5300 for a disk storage capacity of up to 448 disk drives and up to 1.344 Petabytes (PB) of physical storage capacity. While a fewer number of EXP5060 expansion units can be attached, only 8, the disk storage capacity of the EXP5060 actually allows for more disks to be accommodated. As a result, when 8 EXP5060 units are attached to an IBM DS5300, it can scale to up to 480 disk drives and up to 1.44PPB of physical storage capacity.
