The Sun Fire X4600 server offers enterprise data centers more than just a powerful server platform – it offers them innovation. This is because the X4600 is an industry first, as a 4U modular rack server built on x86 architecture with 64-bit computing capabilities and the ability to scale to become a 16-way server. Furthermore, Sun Fire X4600 servers also feature a vast amount of cutting-edge virtualization technologies including VMware, Solaris Containers, Microsoft Virtualization, XEN and more. And while Sun X4600 servers come equipped with up to 8 single or dual core AMD Opteron processors, models 856, 885 or 880, they can be upgraded to the next generation of AMD Opteron processors with minimal impact to the infrastructure for a truly future-ready investment. Other expansion capabilities of Sun X4600 rack servers include an expansion unit that allows for an additional 8 PCI expansion slots – 6 of which support PCIe and 2 of which support PCI-X.
With all of these technologies and features, particularly the AMD Opteron processors, the Sun Fire X4600 server is able to provide twice the performance, energy-efficiency and scalability of Intel Xeon-based rack servers. Able to be configured with a maximum memory of 64 Gigabytes (GB), the Sun X4600 server can be outfitted with up to 4 hot-swappable Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and 4 total Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports – 2 in the front and 2 in the rear of the server. Ideal for mission critical applications as well as a building block for large compute clusters, additional benefits that X4600 servers are able to offer include support for multiple operating systems (OS) such as Red Hat, Windows, Solaris and VMware, as well as redundant and hot-swappable power supplies and support for onboard RAID levels 0 and 1.
