The HP ProLiant BL400 series of c Class blade servers has a model for business of all sizes, with maximum memory ranging from 32 Gigabyte (GB) to 192 GB. Designed in a half-height form factor, the HP BL400 series offers the same advantages of ProLiant tower and rack servers while being much more compact and power-efficient. Some specific advantages that the BL400 series offers includes high reliability, secure remote console and remote control, advanced Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory and improved uptime. With enterprise-class capabilities, the ProLiant BL400 series is ideal for high-performance applications such as running an infrastructure in heterogeneous data centers as well as database, messaging and virtualization applications. The 400 series of HP blade servers lends itself particularly well to virtualization, and some of the models including BL490c and BL495c were designed specifically with that application in mind.

ProLiant BL400 blade servers cover a wide range of server requirements, and so while they share a similar base design, each are equipped with different design features. For instance, each server blade in the BL400 series has a maximum of two processors, which can be Intel Xeon processors or AMD Opteron processors, 2 expansion slots and similar remote management features. Remote management features include the latest technologies such as Integrated Lights Out 2 (iLO 2 / iLO 3) and Virtual Connect Technology, as well as a variety of network interconnect options and embedded Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) controllers. However, they also have multi-core options when it comes to processors and depending on the model can have 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 cores, as well as having anywhere from 8 to 16 Dual In-line Memory Module (DIMM) slots.
