The GS1280 proceeded HP/Compaq's popular GS320 wildfire line, but with a whole new streamlined design using a switchless mesh backbone with built in SMP (symmetrical multiprocessor) architecture. The result is a server with benchmarks that crushed the similar enterprise offerings of Sun and IBM on multiple levels. The GS1280 system can be ordered as a Model 8, Model 16, Model 32 and Model 64 configuration. Thus, scalability up to 64 processors at 1.15Ghz or 1.3Ghz speeds, and 8GB of memory per CPU (512GB max) with optional RAID feature. Capable of up to 64 hard partitions for Tru64 Unix and 32 partitions for VMS, the GS1280 also manages up to 704 PCI/PCI-X connections and 64 AGP. I/O expandability is achieved by using separate standard or high performance I/O drawers connected to the system processing drawers. The GS1280 supports Open VMS and Tru64 Unix operating systems.
