Proceeding the AlphaServer ES45 with a redesigned switch based architecture, it is the first AlphaServer with growth options transforming from a workgroup class server into a departmental ES80 configuration.

A single ES47 Model 2 system building block drawer supports an EV7 dual alpha processor, in 1GHz or 1.15Ghz speeds, up to 8GB memory per CPU, and two hard drives or one DAT drive. In its maximum configuration as an ES80 Model 8, the server supports up to 4 system building block drawers with 8 processors, 64GB of memory (with optional RAID feature), an impressive 64 PCI I/O expansion slots, 8 AGP slots and N+1 redundant power. The system drawers are all connected by a cable/DSL hub that facilitates their communications. I/O expansion is achieved by using separate standard or high performance I/O drawers connected to the system processing drawers. The AlphaServer ES47/ES80 supports Open VMS and Tru64 Unix operating systems. This server can be divided into 4 logical partitions to allow for multiple instances of the operating system. Each partition has its own shared-nothing set of CPUs, memory and I/O resources and is viewed as its own node.
