Juniper EX8200 Series Switches

The Juniper EX8200 series is a line of modular Ethernet switches that deliver the port densities, scalability and high availability required for today's demanding data center and campus core environments. The EX8200 is available in two models, each featuring their own unique form factor: the EX8208 and the EX8216. The Juniper EX8208 features an 8-slot chassis, while the Juniper EX8216 features a 16-slot chassis. This means that the EX8208 is much smaller, equaling 14 rack units, while the larger EX8216 equals 21 rack units. Further differences between the 2 models within the Juniper EX-8200 series include a difference in wire-rate forwarding performance. The Juniper EX-8208 features a forwarding rate of 960 million packets per second, while the Juniper EX-8216 features a much faster forwarding rate of 1.92 billion packets per second – although both EX8200 model options can handle packets of any size.

And while the 2 Juniper EX8200 models of modular Ethernet switches do have a lot of differences that set them apart, they also have some similarities. For instance, both models in the EX8200 series are future-ready since they feature a built-in migration path that will enable future 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) deployments. Furthermore, both Juniper EX8200 switches use the same type of line cards, and these line cards enable them to offer various interfaces including 10/100/1000BASE-T, 100BASE-FX/1000BASE-X and 10GbE. However, herein lies another difference because when fully configured, an EX8208 switch is only able to support 384 GbE or 64 10 GbE ports at wire speed, or they are able to support 320 10 GbE ports for shard bandwidth applications.  The EX8216 switch, on the other hand, is able to support double those figures, which gives it 10GbE port densities that are hard to beat. A shared feature of these Juniper EX8200 switches that is hard to beat, is that they both offer support for Virtual Chassis technology, which is unique to Juniper and provides the advantage of taking two interconnected switches and allowing them to operate as a single, logical device.
