Cisco Catalyst 6500 Switches
The Cisco Catalyst 6500 series of switches make up Cisco's flagship core switching product line. As a high performance switches series, Cisco Catalyst 6500 switches are feature-rich, which allows them to be used in enterprise IT environments for many applications, including wiring closet instances. Cisco 6500 chassis are available in four different models that feature 3 slot, 4 slot, 6 slot, 9 slot, or 13 slot configurations. And since Cisco 6500 switches feature a 2 Terabits per second (Tbps) fabric, this means that they are capable of 80 Gigabits per second (Gbps) switching capacity per slot. Furthermore, the Catalyst WS-C6506, WS-C6509, and WS-C6513 switch models each have the ability to run redundant supervisor engines, which are available in a wide variety of models ranging from throughput speeds of 32Gbps to 720Gbps. Additionally, Cisco Catalyst 6500 switches can feature various line cards that are able to provide 10/100 and 10/100/1000 connectivity in both Power Over Ethernet (PoE) and non-PoE formats.
Other shared features of the modular chassis switches within the Cisco Catalyst 6500 series include the ability to scale up to 4 Tbps system capacity when using the Cisco Catalyst Virtual Switching System, able to provide single point of management, able to deliver end-to-end virtualization when utilizing Universal Protocol/Multi-Label Protocol Switching (UP/MPLS) technologies, investment protection through ingress/egress TrustSec Reflectors and more. Additionally, the Catalyst 6500 series features a new, integrated traffic monitoring hardware called Network Analysis Modules (NAM-1 and NAM-2) that allow for improved network security and capacity planning as well as application-level visibility into network traffic. However, there are many ways in which the various models within the Cisco 6500 switch series are different as well. For instance, the maximum port density is the highest, all the way to 528, when using a Cisco Catalyst 6513 switch.
